THE AIM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL
SKILLS COACHING
All elite athletes experience days when performing in their sport comes a lot easier to them. Days when they have a greater awareness of what is going on around them and what they need to do to perform at their best. Needless to say there are also days when an athlete is performing that the skill level and technique fail to achieve the desired results. No matter how hard the athlete tries, concentration and focus is 'off' and they continuously make the wrong decisions or are unable to apply their skills to a high standard.
Poor performance by any highly talented athletes is often due to lack of concentration, being anxious & stressed and being negative about ones skill level or performance. This predominantly occurs when the athlete has a poor preparation prior to performing, when they have not got a clear idea of what they want achieve, are distracted by things they have no control over, are letting past mistakes hinder their present performance and have negative attitude about how the performance will pan out.
Until quite recently, coaching was directed to mastering the physical and technical aspects of sport, yet significantly ignored that fact that we are highly influenced by our thoughts and emotions. Yes, it is highly important that an athlete learns and devotes many hours of practice to physical and technical aspects of their sport. From a psychological perspective if an athlete is aiming to perform to a high standard they need devote an equal amount of time developing their thought process to have a clearer idea of what needs to be achieved and to apply this when the pressure is on.
It is a wrongly held belief by many athletes that psychological skills training is purely for those with mental issues, in reality psychological skills development is ESSENTIAL for all athletes that are serious about achieving within their sport. An athlete that spends more of their time developing and working on their thinking and temperament with people such as myself, as well as improving the physical and technical elements required to play their sport, is one that is most likely to achieve their goals and perform to a high standard.

Research has shown that when an athlete limits the time they spend on their personal development, it ultimately affects their ability deal with stresses and pressures of elite sport.
When an athlete integrates goals for their career, educational and personal development along with their sporting commitments, they adopt a greater ability to handle the demands of elite sport, acquire a greater array of coping strategies and ultimately IMPROVE their performance.
